Centered around the concept of “Pedestrianisation”, the design of Church Street redevelopment project was aimed at rationalizing the carriageway and increasing the width of pedestrian pavement. Moving away from the archetypal scheme of Indian streets, service pipes run under the footpaths and the provision of service chambers at regular intervals thus eliminates the need for un-necessary road digging by various utility agencies. Surface run off strategy includes storm water drains that carry rainwater in pipes. The redevelopment work includes increasing the green cover along the street and replacing Sodium-vapour lights with energy-efficient LED streetlights. The design makes use of locally sourced cobblestone and sadarhalli granite stone. The patterned granite cobblestone not only serves as a traffic calming measure but the ‘Kasuti design’ on it also brings about a sense of the local culture. The redevelopment of Church Street is the harbinger of change for every Indian Street; aiming to be a “legacy design”, aging gracefully and requiring low maintenance.
